It has been a very interesting week here at Corstorphine with the very big news that we will be visited by HM Inspectors from Education Scotland in the week commencing 15th January 2018. As you will have seen in our staffing update, we are in the fortunate position where Mrs Briggs will start as HT on 8th January and my last day at Corstorphine will be Friday 26th January. This will allow us to lead the school through the inspection together.
As part of the inspection, Inspectors gather the views of stakeholders via an online survey which is available from https://forms.education.gov.scot/s/2ZR0Y/
A separate survey for nursery Parents is available from https://forms.education.gov.scot/s/YJ06O/
I would like to encourage you to complete the survey. Inspectors will also be meeting with groups of parents during the inspection so to be part of that discussion you should complete the survey with additional links provided to indicate your interest in taking part.
We are very aware of the quick turnaround, but would really appreciate if you could complete the survey by 22/12/17 for one child or for each of your children in attendance.
As you will have seen in the daily updates, the sickness related absences have continued to fall throughout the week and we have been beginning to get back to normal at Corstorphine. Just to be on the safe side we have continued our enhanced cleaning regime and have continued to remind pupils to have good hand hygiene. This will continue next week. I would also like to thank parents for sticking to the ‘at least 48 hour rule’ as this has been instrumental in getting the situation under control.
PTA Christmas Fair
Dear Parents and Carers,
This year the Corstorphine Primary School PTA Christmas Fair raised over £4800 for the school.
It’s a fantastic achievement but it would not have been possible without the support of the Teaching Staff, School Admin and Janitorial staff, recently retired PTA members, Willing Helpers and P7 pupils, Friends and family who helped setup, run and strip out the Fair. It’s a mammoth task and we are truly grateful for your help.
The PTA must also thank the parents, pupils and those members of the community who came to the Fair and spent their hard-earned money on the day. After all, it’s your contributions that give us our total.
It would be very remiss of me not to personally thank the PTA committee too, since they bear the burden of the planning, preparations and execution of the Fair. It have been a fairly intense period of activity over 10 weeks, on top of their normal parental, social and work responsibilities.
So to you all, on behalf of the PTA and personally,
PS. There is still an opportunity to purchase 2018 school calendars, an ideal way of keeping track of school events, clubs and activities, packed lunch days and school holidays.
Please visit https://www.jumblebee.co.uk/corstorphineprimaryschoolptashop and order one now!
Dear Parents and Carers,
A separate but just as important “Thank You” goes to all those that generously donated to the Xmas Fair. From prizes for the Raffle and Tombolas, through baking, biscuits and cakes for the cafe and home baking stand and to the great range of toys and books donated too.
May I also thank everyone who bought Raffle tickets. The Raffle is probably the single biggest earner in all our activities and really helps up the grand total.
Eco Art Fair
Wednesday 20th December in the gym hall, 9:00am-10:00am.
The children have been working hard creating their art displays and we look forward to welcoming you in to enjoy them!
We are undergoing a few changes here at Corstorphine so I would like to take this opportunity to provide you with a staffing update.

Christmas Jumper Day
Our new bike and scooter racks have now been installed, thanks to generous grants from Sustrans and Project Play. There are now twice as many bike racks in the bike shed along with dedicated scooter racks – no more tangled heap of scooters! There are also additional bike and scooter racks by the jungle gym so please do make use of these.
To celebrate this we will be having a launch on Thursday 11th January. Plans are being developed right now! There will be a ‘Bling Your Bike or Scooter’ competition with a grand parade and prizes for the best blinged. We are also hoping to provide a bike / scooter breakfast for anyone who cycles or scoots that day and to have Dr Bike on hand to check over bikes and do minor repairs for free.
For the parents, there will be a women’s Breeze ride at 1pm on the same day with a free coveted Breeze water bottle for anyone who signs up. Breeze rides for women also run from the school at 1pm on the first Tuesday and third Thursday of each month. Sunday rides are also planned for January and February. For details of these rides and to book your place please contact email@example.com
Watch out for more details of the launch events after the Christmas break.
We would like to thank Diana Farrell, Mark Symmonds, Kirsty Rankin and Project Play for making this possible.
We will be doing Christmas post next week so please remind your child to post any cards in the post box outside Mr Weymss’ office.
Despite the chilly start to the week, each class has had the opportunity to visit the area with their teacher and the playground representatives will talk them through the different areas and how to keep themselves safe.
The fencing around Project Play will be removed before Monday morning so we request that you remind your child that there is no supervision on the equipment before or after school. If they play on it they do so at their own risk and parents are responsible for the safety of their children during these times.
- RoSPA Report
- H&S action plan
- Risk assessment
We would encourage you to read these documents as a family to reinforce the shared responsibilities for health and safety when using the equipment.
Please note that use of the playground will be the responsibility of the school during school hours only as it is with the Jungle Gym and Loose Materials. We are not responsible for children using this before or after school.
The Play Area will be used by;
Nursery AM: 8.35am-11.45am
P1-3: 8.50am-3pm (12.15pm on Fridays)
P4-7: 8.50am-3.15pm (12.25pm on Fridays)
Nursery PM: 12.25pm-3.35pm
Out with these times the responsibility lies with parents/carers.
The choir visited the Dower House on Wednesday spreading festive cheer to one and all. Unfortunately we had to postpone their visit to Tesco yesterday due to the ice, we have rescheduled this to next Thursday.
The children from Nursery – P7 had the treat of attending M&Ms production of Sleeping Beauty today in the Gym Hall. It was wonderful to look across the audience all dressed in their Christmas outfits and jumpers too! The show was great fun and included lots of songs, dances and humour. A lovely way to end the week!
P3/4c, P4a and P4b
Last session P3/4 and P4s had fun making and tasting smoothies, wraps and fruit treats. They then went on to create a recipe book that with the children choosing all funds going to the Food Bank. We have recently found out that this raised £63.20.
Parent Council Travel Survey
The Corstorphine Primary Parent Council are about to review the School Travel Plans and as part of this we need to do a baseline of current travel, to and from the school. We have been looking at solutions and ideas on how to improve school travel and also how the school deals with complaints relating to parking and increased traffic surrounding the school. We want to take advantage of and harness some of the recent interest in cycling and the Councils Active Schools programme and the Governments Active Travel opportunities. We are doing some research into what parents/carers, pupils and staff feel about the subject and also looking for some input of your ideas.
We are hoping to improve the best ways of keeping the communication channels with parents/carers, pupils and staff, open on this subject, as this will be an ongoing process for a short while.
As part of our first step in reviewing the School Travel Plan, we would like you to help us by answering a few quick questions, which won’t take long, about your journey to and from school and your ideas. We really appreciate your time in doing this.
We have prepared a Survey Monkey, attached which should take up five minutes of your time. Each child should each complete their own survey. We encourage you to fill it in as much information as possible, you may need your parents or carers to help you do this but it is important we have your opinions.
Lastly if you want to get involved or interested in hearing more please give us your name and an email address at the end.
Thank you in advance for your valuable time.
